Description: Second in the series. This cache will bring you to the site of the Wagner Palace Car company of Buffalo. Many of the buildings at this site are from the original factory complex.
In 1867, Webster Wagner, an employee of the New York Central Railroad invented his first "Drawing Room" or "Palace" car, now known as a "sleeper".
The first 4 cars cost 3,200 each, and provided berth for the sleepers, along with a cheap blanket and pillows.
The Wagner Palace Car Company of Buffalo built many of the sleeper cars for the New York Central RR and was the main competition for the Pullman Palace Car Co.
During the 1890's, the Wagner Car Co. was one of the largest employers in Buffalo. The company was bought by the Pullman Palace Car Co. in 1900.
The plant, which covered 35.7acres, continued in operation until it's shutdown in 1959.
Many of the original buildings survive to this day. To the west of the cache site, you can see the roundhouse of the West Shore RR, a forerunner of the New York Central RR beyond the fence.
The image below shows the interior of one of the cars circa 1897. The seats would fold flat, and the angled panel above the seats would fold down to form the berths. Attendants would then make up the beds and rig privacy curtains.
As an interesting fact, Mr. Wagner died in a rail accident while riding in one of his cars on Friday the 13th of January 1882 in the Bronx NY.
