Headline cache of the GJCCCVB “Inclined to Cache” Geotrail – http://arcg.is/1Rh3Y15. No trip to Johnstown is complete without a visit to our world-famous Inclined Plane.
Do NOT go beyond the fence line or climb over/under/through the tracks.
The Johnstown Inclined Plane, http://www.inclinedplane.org, is the steepest vehicular Incline in the world, carrying passengers and cars over 500 feet vertically up the 70.9 degree rail slope from the Stonycreek River in downtown Johnstown to Edgehill Drive.Geotrail page.
The Incline was originally built and opened in 1891 to haul men and materials up the hillside to facilitate development of the residential area atop the hill. Take some time to walk through the area. There are several other caches within walking distance.
Originally, the passenger compartment was located beneath the vehicle compartment, which, at the time, consisted of horses and wagons. (See Attached Photo)
The Inclined Plane was designed by Samuel Diescher of Pittsburgh, who also designed the Monongehela, Duquesne, Fort Pitt, and Castle Shannon inclines in Pittsburgh along with machinery associated with the first Ferris Wheel for the Chicago World’s Fair.
This is Featured Cache #1 of the Greater Johnstown/Cambria County Geotrail, which highlights the scenic and historic amenities of the area. Be sure to collect and record the Geotrail Code Word from in (or near, in the case of micros) the cache to your official Geotrail Passport, which can be obtained from the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. A map and list of all caches featured in the Geotrail can be found at Geotrail page.
GPSGames offers an alternative
geocache listing platform. Coordinates are visible even without an
account, but you will need an account to log here before they are possibly
cross listed to GC. GPSGames displays other
caches that may not already be cross listed. If you are not the listed
owner of one of these caches, we strongly discourage you from posting your own
listing at or near their coordinates.
You won't immediately be able to log your smiley, but you
will be able to get the applicable code word. Attendees of the Geotrail launch event were given the advanced release of
this cache listing, so the FTF is probably already entered in the logbook.
