This is a two stage Virtual cache. There is no container, you will need to retrieve code words from BOTH points of interest as described below. This VIRTUAL is located on the Allegheny Portage (ALPO) Railroad National Historic Site managed by the National Park Service. Please stay on existing public trails while seeking the clues at the provided coordinates. The hike is a 2 mile lollypop route approximately 1/3 on grassed railroad bed and 2/3 on a wooded nature trail with unimproved surface.
2nd Stage - Stage 2 - N40° 27.573' W78° 33.305'
There is no entry fee for this NPS site. There are two trailhead opportunities. The first is from the ALPO Visitors Center at N40° 27.455' W78° 32.928'and trailhead at N40° 27.464' W78° 33.112'. The second is from the picnic area off Old Route 22 at N40° 27.543' W78° 33.504' with the trailhead at N40° 27.541' W78° 33.466'.
In addition to hiking and historic interpretation, these trails are a popular winter destination for cross country skiing. The ALPO trace provides approximately one mile of level wooded terrain, while the nature trail and other picnic area connectors combine to provide more meandering routes with isolated sections of more challenging slopes.
