It's up to the stasher whether or not to be obscure or forthright - at the same time the cache may require some description in order to find it - especially if it's in a very obscure location. It's up to the stasher to be as cryptic as he/she wants to be. We're also constantly defining the sport and looking for new ways of twisting the rules a bit.
I'm personally the kind of person that'll play Escape from Monkey Island (or any other adventure game) for a while, get stuck, and look up the hints to the game (yeah, I know). When you're driving 2-3 hours one way to hide or seek a cache, as we do a lot here in the Pacific Nortwest, it's nice to have a printed "hint sheet" in case we can't find the thing.
You're right though - it's getting there that's lots of fun. I try to find interesting places to hide my stash so you have more than one treasure to find.
If you want to be obscure to the extreme, try Letterboxing. I haven't seeked one out yet (not too many here), but some of the clues can be pretty difficult. Letterboxing.com -
