Re: [gpsstash] Fw: "Cache of Fun" GeoCoded-CyberStash

it may be fine and all. .but is it still a gps stash / geocache?

I think you've got a whole different game, really..

in my mind, the cool thing about the standard geocache / gps stash game is
there's a real physical location ... you're actually finding a specific
object... it is a real GPS application that is quite unique, where you
actually need to go out and find something..... for the
cyber-pseudo-stashes, I would think that if you're in the general area (50
feet? 200 feet?), you'll figure out the password... you also dont know if
you actually "found it" until you can get back online and confirm the
password... this leaves out the potential non-internet users.. the existing
game could be printed on flyers and distributed to any kind of outdoor/gps
users, at GI Joes, or REI, etc. (pacific northwest outdoor stores, for those
of you in the rest of the world)....also, someone who has successfully found
a "cyberstash" could just post the password on the newsgroup, or this list,
and bingo.. there goes that one... also, the whole "i wonder what's in the
stash?" aspect is gone (one thing that originally attracted me to it)..
there's no tangible prize... no immediate gratification...

i also might add that everyone that comes to the website, or reads a post on
the newsgroup or on this list, already has the idea that they're gonna find
a physical stash.. The idea has stuck, period... Apparently, now we'd need
to start new categories.. physical stashes, cyber stashes, mind stashes,
virtual stashes, dream stashes, who knows :). start getting too complicated
and people will probably shy away.. it will be getting too geeky.. soon
enough someone would come up with some stash, where the coords are based on
some trig formula or shakespeare clue that needs to be solved...

Dave, I think you're gettin too intricate... we already have a good basic
game.. all that's needed is TIME for it to expand. All anyone needs to
participate is a GPS.. no clue-solving skills, nothing.. The basics you came
up with originally will work forever, as far as I can tell.. Take something,
leave something, write it in the logbook. its beautifully simple and
elegant. let's go with what we have, and concentrate on that. A container
at the posted coordinates, filled with various treasures.. Just let it
work... We have something good, and it is catching on suprisingly fast...
We've got 32 physical stashes in a month... At the current rate, imagine a
year from now.. or 5 years from now... By comparison, the letterboxing
north america site (the only comparable organization I can think of) has
around 360 active letterboxes, starting in 1997 -- thats about 10 a month.

If we really want a new twist on the existing game, I think a better
direction to go in is unpublished stashes.. place a real stash, post the
location. in that stash's logbook you'd find coords to a second one in
relatively close proximity... Several people have suggested this BTW, and I
sort of did that in my original 2 St Helens stashes, except I did end up
posting them both on the website, unfortunately... Call it a chain stash or
something...

so tell me should I have the cyberstashes on the website?
