Re: [gpsstash] New geocache in Belgium

Hi Alan,

It seems to me that the Difficulty Factor of the GeoCaches is something very
variable. That all depends on the mind of the hunters.

For example, the Haut-Fays stash http://users.swing.be/geocache/redu.htm is
less than 10 meters from a two lanes paved road. The DF would then be 1 or
even zero: no planning, no difficulty, week (no?) interest.

I would never have placed a cache there if it weren't for the Degree
Confluence project (integer coordinates).

To make it more interesting to go and set the stash we decided to start from
a place 10 kilometers east and ride our mountain bikes. We had to cross two
valleys 200 meter deep, the pathes in the woods were not easy at all (lots
of roots, stones, mud, ...), good orienteering skills were necessary,... We
rode 17km to go and 22km to get back. On the way back, on a muddy path in a
pine forest along the Lesse river, my back tyre exploded. I tried to replace
the tube but the multitool broke apart and I could not dismantle the wheel.
So we walked the last 6km pushing the bikes. Total time from car to car: 5+
hours. What would be the DF? Maybe 4?

Another idea: The Gedinne train station
http://www.b-rail.be/cgi-script/stations/stat_info_ari.cgi?8300435+0 is just
3 kilometer in the south-west of the stash. From there, go to the stash and
return would end up in a 10km walk mainly on easy pathes in the woods. DF=2?

The Graide train stop is at 8km south of the stash. It could be combined
with the Gedinne station to plan a 15 to 20 km hike (walking or MTB) for 1/4
in the fields and 3/4 in the woods. DF would then be 3? Planning with the
timetable, buy a topomap and prepare a route, some orienteering skills
necessary, etc...

This reasoning applies too to the other cache that I placed
http://users.swing.be/geocache/reuland.htm
Car access is possible down to 85 meters (on a dirt road). It is not in an
"extreme" place but the area allows for planning nice hikes from 1/2 day to
2 days.

As a conclusion: the minimum DF for both geocaches is 1 and can go up to 4
depending on where the hunters will start. Let's not forget it is a game and
that for sure the FF (Fun Factor) will have the same value as DF.

Happy stash hunting!

Pierre
