Joshua Tree caches removed

Received a letter today from the U.S. Department of Interior. It courteously, but curtly, informed me that the National Park Service had removed two of my geocaches from the Joshua Tree National Park (Calif) as they were in violation of Title 36 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 2.22. The section states that "abandoned property" or leaving property unattended for longer than 24 hours is prohibited. They also cited another section that states all mine shafts or adits are closed to the public. The two removed caches were "Old Dale Road Gilacache" and the "Fargo Underground". They said they are holding the contents of the caches at park headquarters if i wanted to retrieve them. I don't think i'll bother the hour drive to 29 Palms to collect a tin of Altoids and a plastic gila monster. I guess it was only a matter of time before the NPS got busy collecting caches. Frankly, i have mixed feelings about caches in National Parks. I understand their point of view as well. Now, if they could just keep motorcycles out of closed wilderness areas i'd be happy!

I've updated my web pages regarding the removals as well as made notes on the Geocaching.com and Navicache.com sites.
