if it is a straight out etrex, i recommend the software line from Maptech to use on your pc or laptop. with the purchase of an interface cable from garmin, and attaching it to your computer, you can seamlessly travel around your area viewing digital topo maps from USGS while plotting and managing waypoints. Additionally, i would recommend purchasing a neoprene cover if you intend to use the etrex in a maritime role. it will protect it from impacts, and assist it in floatation if it should go overboard. other than that, have fun.
