The BEST containers I've found are large Coleman water jugs. They have handels, screw on lids, and pouring spouts. As a precaution I put a dab of caulk in the water spout. Watch for them in clearence sales after the summer camping and picknicking season is over.
I have a cache in one of these containers buried on an island beach in northern Michigan (http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=53). It's been there 1 year this week. The container made it through storms, waves and 12 feet of snow last winter. The contents were still perfectly dry when I checked last week. I helped myself to one of the granola bars inside and it was still tasty fresh.
BTW this cache still hasn't been visited by anyone besides me.

That is almost exactly what I used for my last cache, except mine was round. They are perfect....

I use a Rubbermaid #3142 Screw Top jar, 4" diameter opening, 7" deep inside.
Not big enough for a CD, but still a good size. The lid is watertight and it has a good handle to help screw it on tight or open.
