A while back, this list's settings were changed to "all posts require approval" by the moderator before being posted. The moderator sometimes waited days before approving messages. Dialogs were impossible. Thankfully, the list owner changed the settings back to open posting. But that opens the door for spam. Not good, either.
Yahoo offers a setting whereby only new list subscribers are moderated. This traps virtually all the spam, without slowing down the regular posters. Once a new poster shows he is not a spammer, the list owner can change that poster's settings to "no moderation". This requires a little more work on the list owner's part, but it works really well to keep an open list going AND trap the spam as well. If the list owner doesn't have the time to perform this duty, perhaps he can promote someone he trusts to moderator and that person can do it.
